Technical University of Braunschweig – Institute for Control Systems (IFR)

In the research group autonomous driving/driving assistance, the IFR examines which skills are needed for vehicles, in order to successfully participate in public transportation, with human and technical drivers. Therefore, the interest is in adequate perceptual algorithms, as well as in forms of the internal knowledge representation, methods of control and regulation technology, as well test procedures and test tools (for example, as sub-application in UR:BAN Cognitive Assistance). In the internal lead project Urban Pilot, the IFR experimental vehicle drives in an automated manner, on the Braunschweiger ring road.

The vehicle, as a system, is considered by the IFR as belonging to the group of vehicle system technology, with new tools and processes being researched, for the development, testing and diagnosis of electronic vehicle systems (for example, BMWi project aFAS, research vehicle MOBILE, DFG project CCC). For various applications, simulations are designed and further developed, which range from model to software, hardware to vehicle-in-the-loop. With the aFAS project, IFR also works on AP2, on adapting the development processes, according to ISO26262, the test and release process, as well as the safety concept for fully automated vehicles.

Within PEGASUS, the focus is on the usage of tools for the testing of automated vehicles. The virtual testing kits allow for an extensive modeling of test scenarios for the simulation. The test scenarios can also be experienced and validated with the vehicle-in-the-loop test bench, with real vehicles and augmented reality. Additionally, the reference sensor technology test bench allows for the referencing of sensors, the development of sensor models and the detailed recording of traffic situations. The development of test processes is also part of the IFR spectrum.
